Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute
Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute (SORI) was established in 2002 by Dr David Parker and Dr Myles Coolican, Orthopaedic Surgeons. SORI is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the enhancement of knowledge and treatment of orthopaedic disorders by high quality research.
SORI is performing research into arthritis, ligament injuries, and knee trauma, as well as a number of other conditions. Work is being done in clinical studies, as well as basic science projects. SORI employs a Research Director, Dr Karen Beatty, a part time research assistant, Dr Joy Tripovich, as well as additional casual research assistants. SORI has collaborations with a number of other research facilities including the Biomechanics and Gait Laboratory at Sydney University, the Institute of Magnetic Resonance Research based at Royal North Shore Hospital, and the Raymond Purves Laboratory, also based at Royal North Shore Hospital.
Mission
SORI’s mission is to develop a better understanding of the causes of orthopaedic disease, leading to more effective prevention and treatment of these conditions through:
- continually questioning the reasons behind development of orthopaedic pathology;
- investigating the outcomes of rehabilitative surgical procedures in order to determine the most effective methods to enable injured persons to return to a full and complete life;
- collaborating and forming interdisciplinary teams to enable an holistic examination of a variety of pathologies, both through clinical studies and basic science projects;
- presenting and publishing research for peer review and comment;
- providing opportunity for local and overseas visiting doctors to train with experienced orthopaedic surgeons and researchers in the skills involved in orthopaedic research;
- providing the opportunity for keen medical students to expand their knowledge in an area of interest and to contribute in a productive way to the field of their career of choice whilst in training.
