Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute

Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute (SORI) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the study and research of orthopaedic disorders, in particular those associated with the knee joint. It was established in 2002 by Orthopaedic Surgeons Dr David Parker and Dr Myles Coolican. SORI uses high quality research methods to investigate the causes and pathogenesis of common knee disorders, as well as the associated treatments and rehabilitative procedures currently employed for these disorders. In addition, SORI also conducts research on arthritis, cartilage pathologies, ligament injuries, knee trauma, as well as other sports-related injuries such as spinal cord damage.

Research is performed by way of both clinical studies and basic science projects. At present SORI has over 30 active projects. Some projects are run in collaboration with other research facilities including the Biomechanics and Gait Laboratory at University of Sydney, the Institute of Magnetic Resonance Research, and the Raymond Purves Laboratory, the latter two based at Royal North Shore Hospital.

All projects are overseen by the Director of Research, Jowveria Mufti. SORI also employs an Administration Officer, as well as additional casual Research Assistants. SORI provides research projects and work experience opportunities for keen university students. Dr Coolican and Dr Parker are actively involved in all SORI projects, with bi-monthly meetings keeping everyone informed and up-to-date with SORI progress.

All work carried out at the Institute is intended to increase knowledge and awareness of common knee disorders, with the final aim of providing benefit to the community. SORI personnel take an open-minded approach to their work and are continually open to ideas for research into new orthopaedic issues, alongside the traditional.
