Fellowships

The Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute Fellowships are accredited by the Australian Orthopaedic Association

The Fellowship will provide a broad experience covering all areas of knee surgery, with a balance between clinical work and research. There will be extensive exposure to all areas of knee surgery including arthroplasty, arthroscopy and sports reconstructive surgery, and trauma, including major ligamentous disruptions and periarticular fractures. Fellows will be occupied in perioperative patient care, assisting with and performing supervised surgery, and pursuing research projects. Fellows will be actively involved in regular clinical and scientific meetings, and will be expected to produce at least one research project suitable for presentation at an international meeting and subsequent publication. Fellows will also be involved in teaching of junior medical staff and other health professionals.

The Fellowship is based on the north shore of Sydney, at two hospitals. Royal North Shore Hospital is the major hospital in the northern area of Sydney and is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Sydney. It is situated 10 minutes drive from the city centre, and is a level 1 trauma centre which also performs a substantial amount of elective surgery. A large volume of tertiary referrals provides a good experience in complex knee trauma and post-traumatic reconstructive surgery. The orthopaedic department also includes subspecialists in hip arthroplasty, spinal surgery, upper limb, foot and ankle, and trauma surgery.

A new skills centre facility has been recently built for the purposes of hands-on surgical training, and Fellows will be actively involved in courses on knee surgery techniques. North Shore Private Hospital is on the same campus as Royal North Shore Hospital and has a large volume of elective arthroscopic and arthroplasty surgery. Patients are seen in the outpatient clinic at Royal North Shore Hospital and at Sydney Orthopaedic, Arthritis & Sports Medicine in nearby Chatswood. Research data collection is based also in Chatswood.
